A Portal to the Present

A Portal to the Present
by David Simon
====================

Only the human heart can live in present moment awareness. It is not within the nature of our human mind to be in the now, as its essential purpose is to ponder the past and plan the future. The judging mind is perpetually forsaking the whole for the part. It sees the current scene and imagines it knows how the story will turn out, but this certainty arises out of self-importance or self-pity. This is why all wise beings encourage us to go beyond the mind into the timeless, boundless transcendence of heart-centered awareness.

The paradox is that we cannot get into the present moment, for as soon as we imagine it is someplace to go, we are out of it. Present-moment awareness is living in the tender field of acceptance for what is unfolding. Witnessing awareness is enlivened, while the discriminating mind is quiet. The essence of embracing the present is simply to be here and now with the sounds, sensations, sights, tastes, smells, and emptiness that surround us. Listening, dancing, sculpting, painting, making love, cooking, cleaning, meditating - these are the portals to the present. As writer and mystic scholar Andrew Harvey reminds us, embracing the present being irrigates our minds, illuminates our hearts, and infuses our cells with peace and passion.

With love,
David
